A delightful dish capturing comforting flavors of traditional Hungarian cuisine with a rich, creamy sauce and savory mushrooms.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 10 ounces cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • ¾ cup sour cream

Instructions

  1. Sauté the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent.
  2. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Mix in the minced garlic and both types of paprika. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture, stir to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Gradually pour in the vegetable broth while stirring. Bring to a simmer and allow to thicken for about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Lower the heat and stir in the sour cream until well blended. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  7. Remove from heat and serve warm over pasta, rice, or with crusty bread.

Notes

Avoid overcooking the mushrooms and ensure to taste for seasoning throughout the cooking process.
